ZIG/ZAG/ZINES was set up to create, collect, and distribute zines* made by and for people who think differently, on subjects including neurodiversity, disability, and mental health/illness.

The ZIG/ZAG/ZINES collection appeared at various events, venues and festivals alongside affordable zine-making workshops for non-profits and community groups.

*WTF is a zine?

Zines are independently produced, low/no-cost DIY publications. They can be about any subject and created in any style, typically within a format that allows fast, simple reproduction and small-scale distribution.

They may be informative, creative, and/or subversive, and are often used by people in marginalised communities as a way to share ideas and stories.

Where it all began…

ZIG/ZAG/ZINES began in 2024, when ZIG/ZAG received funding (as part of the 2024 FOD FRINGE festival in the Forest of Dean) to put together a curated collection of zines made by neurodivergent and disabled artists from all around the world.

The ZIG/ZAG/ZINES collection made its debut pop-up appearance accompanied by a series of free zine-making workshops at Coleford Library in April 2024.

Over the next two years, we toured the collection and ran zine-making workshops at libraries, festivals, and art centres, helping everyone from looked-after children to charity staff teams to find new ways to express and share their perspectives on the world.

While the ZIG/ZAG/ZINES pop-up library is now officially in retirement, it still exists and makes very occasional guest appearances at community events.

The majority of zines in the collection were only available in paper format, but we did occasionally publish digital zines – you can view and download these (and more) over at our Itch.io page.

That’s not MY neurodiversity movement!

This printable zine, while likely being completely incomprehensible to anyone who is unfamiliar with either the British children’s picture book series ‘That’s Not My…” and/or the tenets of radical neurodiversity activism, will be perfectly understandable – and hopefully enjoyable – for those who do recognise the extremely niche context.

Let’s Talk Tigers

Did you know that every day, more than five million people across the UK are being chased by a tiger? It’s time to #TalkTigers. If you are sick and tired of seeing the same old ‘awareness raising’ campaigns around mental health, or if you’re simply frustrated with being offered judgmental individualistic solutions to systemic social problems, this downloadable trifold leaflet is for you.
